Course Overview We shall show here as the contesting of social inequalities crosses the French literature in 17th and 18th centuries, ending in the French Revolution. We shall thus study several characteristic texts of this tendency, as portraits of La Bruyère and the fables of La Fontaine, where the authority of the powerful is denounced. Extracts of theater, with Le Mariage de Figaro from Beaumarchais and LfIle des esclaves from Marivaux will show how the French society with the birth of the movement of the Lumières, celebrate the value of equality.
