Course Overview

We will define the mains issues of Romanticism in the XIXth Century France. We will start with evoking the “mal du siècle” with an extract form Musset’s Confession d’un enfant du siècle. Then we’ll study the place of Nature in La Nouvelle Héloïse de Rousseau and some Lamartine’s poems, in association with analysis of artworks. The great importance given to the Self and sentimental lyricism, and the taste fot the exoticism will be studied through a short novel like Chateaubriand’s Atala.
