Course Overview The theme of this course is English Poetry. This allows us to treat the material using approaches from Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Acquisition / English as a Second Language. We will use poetry to practice the four fundamental English skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). In class, we will discuss poetry from many perspectives, analyzing the lyrical and metrical structure, the morphology and syntax, and the surface-level meaning as well as metaphors and symbolism as we read poetry by writers from Poe to Plath. As homework, students will memorize various poems, focusing on fluency, pronunciation, and other aspects of prosody, with guidance from the teacher, and they will have chances to recite their poems in class.
