Course Overview We shall show the wealth of this author who is situated in the hinge of the romanticism and the movement of the Lumières in France. We shall so see how he inaugurates the intimist autobiography in his Confessions. We shall also study his sentimental lyric, such as he expresses himself for example in La Nouvelle Héloïse and his celebration of the nature. We shall evoke besides the theory of the philosopher Rousseau, according to whom the man is naturally good, and how he opposes on this point Voltaire in a famous quarrel.
