Course Overview This seminar course introduces the oldest existing anthology of Japanese poetry, Man'yōshū. It consists of about 4500 Japanese poems made during the roughly 350 years before the middle of the 8th century. The poems were made before the invention of the Japanese syllabary (kana), and although they are entirely written in Chinese characters, they provide precious data on such aspects as the ancient Japanese language, literature, and history.
