| Course Overview |
This course attempts to update the current interpretation of Basho's *1 hokku*2, overviewing the previous study of relevant fields. The lecture focuses especially on the verse which were adopted to the book "Oku no Hosomichi." Examining Basho's verse from the perspectives such as the comparison between his actual journey in 1689 and what was written in the book, the influence of older travel literature and the relationship to "Senjusho," the lecture will provide deeper understanding of what he intended with his expressions. *1 A famous poet lived in early Edo Period *2 The first 17-syllables verse of a linked poem |
