| Course Overview |
This course is designed to introduce linguistic students to the subfield of morphology and morphosyntax, i.e., the internal formation of words and their interactions with phonological rules. We will discuss topics such as allomorphy, affixation, cliticization, inflectional vs. derivational morphology, and so on. We will discuss the following issues: - What exactly is a "word"? Does this concept firmly hold across languages? - Are there atomic units which are built up into hierarchical structures in words? - Where does morphology live in a language's "grammar"? |
