Course Overview For this class we will read Kate Chopin’s classic novel from 1899. This era marks the beginning of a shift in American literature, and Chopin was one of the forerunners of this change. Due controversy surrounding it, it almost disappeared from view before it was revived post-WWII. We will look at concepts of realism and local color. We will also examine the social context around the novel and the burgeoning consciousness.
