Course Overview This course explores the history of Japanese literature through the lens of translation. We will read a select group of literary texts in translation—sometimes in several different translations—and consider how Japanese literature has been constructed both inside and outside of Japan. Our readings will encompass a variety of literary texts, from Manfyōshū poetry to the novels of Murakami Haruki, as well as scholarly essays and newspaper articles on relevant topics. Students will hone their reading comprehension and discussion abilities through weekly assignments, in-class exercises, and presentations.
