Course Overview In this course we will mainly investigate the following questions:
(i)What kind of languages are spoken in Japan?
(ii)What kind of linguistic properties do they have?
(iii)What are the characteristics of the Fukuoka dialect?

Textbook:
Shibatani, Masayoshi (1990) The languages of Japan. Cambridge University Press.

This textbook contains three chapters on the Ainu language and nine chapters on the Japanese language. Each language will be described from the view points of sound structure, word formation, and grammatical structure. Based on the description of the text, we will develop our own views on the languages of this country.

Depending on their interests, students are required to read a part of the text or other meterials and make presentations on the content.
