Course Overview |
Using a wide range of activities (lecture, discussion, online learning, quizzes, student presentations, etc.) this course will provide an overview of Japanese history from its origins to the twelfth century and demonstrate how ancient history is still relevant today. In addition, students will be introduced to Western scholarship on Japanese history and to the wide range of foreign-language resources. Each session will consist of a brief lecture, a number of instructor-led assignments, and short in-class research projects. Throughout the quarter students will also be working on an individual research project that focuses on the history of Kyushu. Students will discuss this project with the course instructor, the TA, and their peers at regular intervals. At the end of the course, each student will also present their final findings at a mini-symposium. |
