Course Overview The book club is a book sales organization with a membership system. It developed widely in Europe and America since the end of 19th century. In this course, we look at the book clubs in Germany, consider its social role and its relation to nationalism.
In the first half, we research the development of the book club in Germany from the end of the 19th century to the 1980s and discuss its contributing significantly to the “democratization of reading”. In the second half, we focus on the nationalistic book club “The German home library” and argue the relationship between the increasing closeness of the new middle-class to the Nazism and the book clubs in Germany after the First World War.
