Contemporary Ethical Thoughts (Lecture V)
|
Numbering Code: LET-HUM3185J Course Code: 2023 SpringTerm weekly Mon2 Ito Classroom E/J科目 (日本語, English) |
Course Overview |
As a major theme, we will focus on "norms," which seem to form the essence of what it means to be "human," and examine them from a philosophical and ethical perspective. In the first semester last year, we discussed how it is possible to understand "norms" in such a way that meaningful actions in accordance with rules can be established. This time, as a further premise of such understanding, we will examine how humans know norms and how they respond to them from the perspective of perception (and also action and ontology). As discussed in the previous class, if norms can be objective in the sense that they are "correlative to subjectivity but non-discretionary," then we can say that they are objectively real in the world, if only to that extent. Through considering the nature of perception of such norms, we will ultimately address the question of what kind of entity norms are for us humans. |

|
Numbering Code: LET-HUM2435J Course Code: 2023 SpringTerm weekly Mon2 Ito Classroom E/J科目 (日本語, English) |
Course Overview |
The perspective of 'elites' has received increasing attention in recent years in terms of modern society. For example, after the French Revolution, the 1791 Constitution abolished the serfdom and hereditary system in public office. However, even in the 19th century, early modern masters with a strong hereditary character held public office, and the emergence of professionalised modern administrators had to wait until the end of the 19th century. Why this discrepancy between ideal and reality? In this exercise, we will read Eric Ansault's The French Elite (2020) to clarify the changing image of the elite (i.e. the image of the ruling class) portrayed by modern society and to rethink modern society from the perspective of the 'elite'. |

Introduction to Linguistics
|
Numbering Code: LET-HUM2702J Course Code: 2023 SpringTerm weekly Mon4 Ito Classroom E/J科目 (日本語, English) |
Course Overview |
As a sub-discipline of humanities, linguistics seeks to uncover human nature by focusing on language. It tries to answer the fundamental question of what constitute grammar as it is internalized in all human beings and how it is related to the grammar of each individual language. It also explores the relationship between language and its speakers who use it. These questions must be addressed by dealing with empirical data from diverse languages upon which linguistic theories are based. This class examines some of such fundamental questions and different approaches of linguistics whereby students will be able to have a basic understanding of linguistics and have a further interest in this field of study. |

This semester, we will give a lesson on the construction of "Clan Archive Studies" in the field of the Hirado Domain in the early modern period. Hirado was an international trading port where Christianity was quickly propagated and the Dutch and English factories existed in the early modern period. Since the establishment of the so-called "鎖国(Sakoku)", the whaling industry and the development of agricultural land led by the clan have risen. On the cultural side, a ceramic industry centered on the "三河内(Mikawachi)" area also took place, and a tea ceremony called "鎮信流(Chin-Shin-Ryu)" was also developed. Furthermore, from the middle of the 18th century to the end of the Edo period, literary daimyo such as "松浦静山(Matsura Seizan)" and "松浦熈(Matsura Hirom)" appeared. The existence of such daimyo has led to the creation of long daimyo essays such as "平戸藩楽歳堂文庫(Hirado-han Rakusaido-Bunko)", "甲子夜話(Kasshi Yawa)" (Volume 278), and "亀岡随筆(Kameoka Zuihitsu)" (Volume 80), which are characteristic of foreign book collections. In addition, "楠本端山(Kusumoto Tanzan)", a scholar of the Hirado Domain, collected a huge amount of Chinese books with his younger brother, "碩水(Sekisui)". Currently, Kyushu University holds a large number of documents and Chinese books that have been handed down to the "楠本(Kusumoto)" family. Against the background of the above history, various documents created and managed in the Hirado domain are included in the "Clan Archive". On top of that, (1) quantitative grasp of the recorded materials that make up the domain archive, (2) extraction of record recognition of the recording subject (lord, domain scholar, scholar, townsman, fisherman, etc.), (3) characteristics of archives in the Hirado domain Aim to elucidate. |

Students will identify their individual strengths and weaknesses in pronunciation and grammar, and learn how to most effectively improve their spoken English. Class time will be divided into several shorter activities, including lecture, small-group dialogue, presentations, one-on-one interviews, language games, and analysis of students' pronunciation, but a majority of the class will be spent in small-group conversation. Importantly, because students learn the most when they enjoy a class, we will think of this course as a chance to talk, laugh, and play games in English, improving students’ speaking and listening while they have fun. |

Cultural Anthropology (Seminar VI)
|
Numbering Code: LET-HUM3843J Course Code: 2023 SpringTerm weekly Thu5 Ito Classroom E/J科目 (日本語, English) |
Course Overview |
In the course of Cultural Anthropology, we conduct a group survey and a survey of life histories biennially. This year we engage in a group survey. Students will learn how to conduct semi-structured interviews and participant observation through practice. This year, we will conduct a survey targeting the Japanese Orthodox Church (JOC) in Kyushu. Orthodoxy is one of the Christian confessions. The orthodoxy was delivered from Russia to Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912), and at its peak had as many believers as the Catholics. Due to the Russo-Japanese War (1904) and the Russian Revolution (1917), the number of believers declined drastically, and today there are probably less than 50 Orthodox believers actively practicing in Kyushu. However, among these believers, in addition to those who have inherited the faith from their ancestors, there are also emigrants from Russia and Ukraine, as well as from Europe and America. By interviewing them, we will learn about the history of the Orthodox Church in Kyushu and the current situation of multicultural coexistence through the JOC. |

Course Overview |
“Nihilism”, which was asserted radically by Nietzsche for the first time and deepened critically by Heidegger again, was once a fundamental problem of religion and philosophy. However, the word seems to be almost unheard of these days. Has "nihilism" already been overcome? Or are there other special circumstances? The purpose of this lecture is to take up this subject again in order to consider our world. The lecture will examine the ideas of Nietzsche and Heidegger, who questioned the theme of nihilism in relation to their own traditions, and at the same time introduce and discuss the ideas of Keiji Nishitani, who accepted this theme of European origin from the standpoint of modern Japan. In particular, we would like to discuss the positions of both Heidegger and Nishitani, who lived in the postwar world of the 20th century, by considering their confrontation with Nietzsche, the contents of nihilist thought, and their insight into the modern technological world. |

In this class, I will use cinema made on the Korean Peninsula during the "turbulent period" of colonialism(Imperialism) and the Korean War to examine how films made on the Korean Peninsula were accepted by the people of that time. By examining how Chosen cinema were accepted not only in the Korean Peninsula but also in the "Naichi" of Imperial Japan, we will consider how policies and politics, film production sites, and the intentions of the recipients of films had unintended consequences. This class will consist of a lecture in the first half and student presentations in the second half. |

While this lecture presents an overview of early modern Japanese literature and its characteristics, I focus especially on the history of early modern waka poetry—its various aspects and accomplishments. Students will learn research methods for empirical analysis based on basic knowledge of classical Japanese texts (object), and basic procedures of transliteration and annotation. In order to master these research methods, students will need to compare waka poetry with other genres and consider waka poetry within its own time. We will follow the latest research on the history of early modern waka poetry by going freely back and forth between the basics and applications. I hope we can think about what literature is and what classics are. |

This class will discuss Henry James's The Turn of the Screw. James is a writer who weaves complex and elaborate texts about human relationships, conflicts, and social oppression that are difficult to express in words. He is extremely conscious in his use of point of view and effectively captures the human psychology. Let's read and understand the themes of his work while carefully considering such methods of expression. The novel is set in 19th-century England. It is necessary to read the novel with an understanding of class, education, and views on gender and sexuality at that time. You will learn that knowledge outside the text is indispensable for interpretation. |

International Humanities X: Analyzing International Scholarship on Japan II
|
Numbering Code: Course Code: 2023 SpringTerm intensive Ito Classroom E科目 (English, English) |
Course Overview |
To what extent did the #MeToo movement take off in Japan and how to make sense of it? Why do sex workers in Japan object to both abolition movements aiming to eliminate prostitution and rights groups striving to advance the rights of those engaged in sex work? The pension system of Japan exempts the pension premium of full-time housewives, but does it really benefit these women? Why do boys almost always outperform girls when it comes to physical strength tests at schools both inside and outside Japan? In the process of addressing these questions, this gender studies course will expose students to local and global issues with which feminist researchers have grappled, and the classical and contemporary gender theories which gender studies scholars have advanced. Together we will be listening to the voices of the marginalized (not limited to women) and diving into various aspects of the questions mentioned above. |
