Course Overview "Norms and Perception"
This course is a continuation of the lectures given in the previous semester.
In this semester, we will further examine the integrated structure of perception and action based on "norms," mainly taking the McDowell-Dreyfus Debate as a starting point. In this context, the issue of "potentiality to be conceptually articulated" will emerge as an important point of contention, which will be discussed with particular reference to Watsuji Tetsuro's argument.

Course Overview * English VI: Language, Culture, Communication *

Overview
This course is a language/linguistics hybrid. There will be lectures and videos on language, culture, and communication from a social science perspective, but students will also practice using the sounds, vocabulary, and grammar of English to communicate their own understanding and viewpoint effectively, through discussion and presentation.

This is partly a linguistics course. As such, we will study the relationship between language, culture, and society, and how communication is achieved through language (and what is communicated). We will also survey the literature on language and solidarity and identity. Students will use TED talks to go more deeply into topics that they are interested in.

This is partly a course on communication in English, especially speaking and listening. We will focus on academic English but we will also occasionally discuss informal English. Lectures will include not just theory but discussion of some of the real linguistic and social situations that students might encounter in English. Importantly, we will spend time for students to thoroughly discuss the topics covered. Students will practice summarizing ideas and expressing their thoughts and viewpoints in English, and listening and speaking in English and about English (though we will sometimes make a contrastive study of Japanese in order to help shed light on English). They will also give three short presentations, in English, about TED talks with topics relevant to the class.

Therefore, class time will be divided into two main sections. Usually, the first half of class will be a lecture, and then, for the second half, students will work in small groups, using English to reflect on the lecture and reading, to discuss further questions, to share their own ideas and experiences, or for their presentations and group discussions based on those topics.

Course Overview *Creative Writing: Poetry*

Overview
The class will give students a chance to work on their English reading, writing, and self-expression skills. They will read and write poetry in English, and share what they have written in class. No special background is required – complete beginners are welcome. Class time will be used to read, discuss, and share English poetry. We will do some in-class writing as well. Students will keep a poetry journal, writing in it for 10 minutes a day, every day.

Goals
1) To help students learn to appreciate poetry in English
2) To help students learn to write poetry in English
3) To develop creative use of English in a relaxed, fun setting
4) To give students a chance to express their thoughts and feelings in writing.
5) To use English poetry to study English phonology, vocabulary, and grammar.
6) To give students a chance to keep a journal, to help improve both their written English and their self-expression abilities, with the hope that it becomes a habit that they keep after the course is finished.
7) To give students a chance to practice presenting their artistic creations to small groups of peers in a supportive setting
8) To practice analyzing and critiquing poetry

Course Overview Classical research does not only mean old research, but also research that has made a significant contribution to the development of subsequent research. In this sense, it is possible not only to learn about the latest research, but also to understand the research that should be done in the future by studying classical research.
In this class, we will focus on classic and important research in social psychology and related fields. Each student will then give a presentation on his/her own classical research in order to gain a deeper understanding of the research and how it has influenced current research. Based on this understanding, participants will discuss the significance of classical research.

Every student in our department is expected to conduct qualitative research. If you fail to have a proper research question, you have little chance to do adequate fieldwork. If you succeed in getting significant qualitative research, you need to know how to refer to previous literature and written materials. In the seminar, one or two students give a presentation on their research. Students learn to redirect their research through the discussion.

Course Overview This semester, we will give a lesson on the construction of "Clan Archive Studies" in the field of the Hirado Domain in the early modern period. Hirado was an international trading port where Christianity was quickly propagated and the Dutch and English factories existed in the early modern period. Since the establishment of the so-called "鎖国(Sakoku)", the whaling industry and the development of agricultural land led by the clan have risen. On the cultural side, a ceramic industry centered on the "三河内(Mikawachi)" area also took place, and a tea ceremony called "鎮信流(Chin-Shin-Ryu)" was also developed. Furthermore, from the middle of the 18th century to the end of the Edo period, literary daimyo such as "松浦静山(Matsura Seizan)" and "松浦熈(Matsura Hirom)" appeared. The existence of such daimyo has led to the creation of long daimyo essays such as "平戸藩楽歳堂文庫(Hirado-han Rakusaido-Bunko)", "甲子夜話(Kasshi Yawa)" (Volume 278), and "亀岡随筆(Kameoka Zuihitsu)" (Volume 80), which are characteristic of foreign book collections. In addition, "楠本端山(Kusumoto Tanzan)", a scholar of the Hirado Domain, collected a huge amount of Chinese books with his younger brother, "碩水(Sekisui)". Currently, Kyushu University holds a large number of documents and Chinese books that have been handed down to the "楠本(Kusumoto)" family. Against the background of the above history, various documents created and managed in the Hirado domain are included in the "Clan Archive". On top of that, (1) quantitative grasp of the recorded materials that make up the domain archive, (2) extraction of record recognition of the recording subject (lord, domain scholar, scholar, townsman, fisherman, etc.), (3) characteristics of archives in the Hirado domain Aim to elucidate.

Course Overview The perspective of 'elites' has received increasing attention in recent years in terms of modern society. For example, after the French Revolution, the 1791 Constitution abolished the serfdom and hereditary system in public office. However, even in the 19th century, early modern masters with a strong hereditary character held public office, and the emergence of professionalised modern administrators had to wait until the end of the 19th century. Why this discrepancy between ideal and reality?
In this exercise, we will read Eric Ansault's The French Elite (2020) to clarify the changing image of the elite (i.e. the image of the ruling class) portrayed by modern society and to rethink modern society from the perspective of the 'elite'.

E科目 (English, English)
Course Overview *English Conversation II: The Path to Fluency II*

The class will be focused on speaking and listening. After an introduction to each lesson, students will work in pairs or groups, practicing their conversational skills and mastering the targeted patterns. This class will cover everything that leads to stronger speaking and listening, from pronunciation and fluency to mastery of grammatical patterns to understanding of English-speaking cultures, and may include some memorization and reciting of short English texts.

The purpose of the class is to increase fluency and understanding of spoken English. Students will identify their individual strengths and weaknesses in pronunciation and grammar, and learn how to most effectively improve their spoken English. Class time will be divided into several shorter activities, including lecture, small-group dialogue, presentations, one-on-one interviews, language games, and analysis of students' pronunciation, but a majority of the class will be spent in small-group conversation.

Importantly, because students learn the most when they enjoy a class, we will think of this course as a chance to talk, laugh, and play games in English, improving students’ speaking and listening while they have fun.

Course Overview This course aims to open the new approach to the lived experience of social sufferings which is that of the clinical sociology. The clinical sociology is the qualitative research method which tries to embed the narratives of the suffering people in the adequate social and historical context to understand them from the standpoint of themselves. Three topics are examined in terms of this approach. The first is the historical treatment of the disabled from the mentally ill to the severely handicapped. The second is the HIV tainted blood product incident in Japan in 1980s. The third is the prolonged incarceration of the patients of the Hansen's disease in Japan. We explore the possibilities of providing care to the suffering people based on the examination of the three topics.

Course Overview The aim of this course is to understand the basic concepts of literary criticism in ancient philosophy and to explain their characteristics. For example, literary works are sometimes regarded as art, but the concept of art did not exist in antiquity. Instead, the concept of 'mimesis' (imitation) played an important role. Also, while today we appreciate literary works using the concenpts of 'fiction/nonfiction,' such a category did not exist in antiquity. So how did ancient people appreciate literary works without concepts such as art and fiction? In this course, we will examine the arguments of Plato and Aristotle, who discussed poetry and artistic works, and consider their historical significance.
