J科目 (日本語, 日本語)
Course Overview In this research, the Konkōmyō saishō ōkyō (Sovereign Kings of the Golden Light Sutra) was chosen as one of the source materials for the study of kunten. The Konkōmyō saishō ōkyō is a Buddhist sutra translated into Chinese by the Tang-dynasty monk Yijing (Jpn. Gijo) in the 7th century, and was revered in Japan since ancient times. The Kasuga Bunko manuscript of the sutra is one of only a few complete manuscript copied during the Nara period. The kunten, added during the Heian period, provide precious data on the Japanese language at that time.

Course Overview Modernity/modernities in the evolution of poetry from the 19th century to the 20th. Charles Baudelaire or Walter Benjamin have played a great role in the conceptualization of the notion of “modernity”. We’ll study major texts written by these authors and confront them to more recent ones, as Antoine Compagnon’s who showed that modernity cannot be simplified to a unique definition. Those forms of modernity will be analyzed in relation to the evolution of poetry through the 19th and the 20th centuries.

Course Overview Japan was the first country outside Europe and North America that rapidly modernized and industrialized after models of the Western nation state. It goes without saying that this development did not occur without difficulties. There were many problems and Japan managed to overcome most of those during the process. Scholars from many disciplines have discussed for a long time why Japan could achieve this development. It is still a very important question in a variety of research disciplines like history, economics, or political and social science. Learning about the Japanese experience of modernization is important for two major reasons. First, it contributes to an understanding of how modern societies can form outside of a European context. Second, it can provide an insight of how to overcome the problems of our contemporary globalizing world, like global warming, pollution, inequality of wealth, and ethnic tensions.
The aim of this class is to provide JICA students, who are enrolled in various different graduate schools of Kyushu University, with basic knowledge about Japanese culture, history, and society and their changes during the modernization process since mid-19th century. Alongside with the knowledge of their respective (predominantly technical) majors, this basic knowledge shall help students to see the process of modernization in a broader context, in order to become better contributors to the development and modernization of their home countries.
This lecture is going to be held by multiple professors covering a variety of different relevant topics.

Course Overview This course is designed to have graduate-level students discuss and explore ways that language interacts with the basic idea of culture. What is culture? How and why is culture so intertwined with language? We will discuss topics such as linguistic relativity, language and identity, and specific cross-linguistic cases where culture strongly determines linguistic choices. We will also discuss the notion of dialogicality and how that manifests itself in language.

Course Overview Economics has been substantially changing its subject matter and methodology since the mid 20th century. This course aims at closely looking at this dynamic process. Along the way, we will ask such questions as:
What the proper subject matter of economics is;
How the economic concepts have been developed; and
How economics is related with our social practice.
The class will involve discussion of these issues among the participants, who are therefore requested to read the relevant part of the textbook before coming to the class.
By completing the course, students will be able to understand the current developments in economics as well as to express their significance in the framework of philosophy.
