Course Overview This course aims to understand Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire), a premodern empire which lasted for 1000 years. Byzantine Empire is the continuation of the Roman Empire, but with different characteristics. For instance, the capital of the Byzantine Empire was not Rome but Constantinople. Christianity became the state religion at the end of the fourth century. The official language changed from Latin to Greek in the seventh century. This course examines the history of the Byzantine Empire in chronological order, and learn the characteristics and transformation of the empire, especially from the economic aspect.
