Course Overview This course aims to open the new approach to the lived experience of social sufferings which is that of the clinical sociology. The clinical sociology is the qualitative research method which tries to embed the narratives of the suffering people in the adequate social and historical context to understand them from the standpoint of themselves. Three topics are examined in terms of this approach. The first is the historical treatment of the disabled from the mentally ill to the severely handicapped. The second is the HIV tainted blood product incident in Japan in 1980s. The third is the prolonged incarceration of the patients of the Hansen's disease in Japan. We explore the possibilities of providing care to the suffering people based on the examination of the three topics.
