Course Overview The aim of this course is to understand the basic concepts of literary criticism in ancient philosophy and to explain their characteristics. For example, literary works are sometimes regarded as art, but the concept of art did not exist in antiquity. Instead, the concept of 'mimesis' (imitation) played an important role. Also, while today we appreciate literary works using the concenpts of 'fiction/nonfiction,' such a category did not exist in antiquity. So how did ancient people appreciate literary works without concepts such as art and fiction? In this course, we will examine the arguments of Plato and Aristotle, who discussed poetry and artistic works, and consider their historical significance.
