φΖΜTv | Course objectives: Carson McCullers (1917-1967) was the author of five long works, twenty short stories, as well as two plays and various other forms of writing. In this class we will read two of her highly-lauded novellas (short novels)—The Ballad of the Sad Café (1943) and The Member of the Wedding (1946)—as well as a selection of her short stories as time permits. We will consider her prevalent themes of loneliness, rejection, grotesqueness, and unrequited and/or one-sided love, while pondering the question: gIs it better to love than to be loved?h Grades will be based upon attendance, participation, a presentation, comprehension quizzes, a weekly reading journal, and a final essay. The course will have occasional lectures; however, students are expected to read the assigned pages before class, and come to class prepared to discuss the texts. Discussion is absolutely crucial, and will play a large factor in grading. Students will be expected to prepare and give at least two presentations in class, to participate in discussions, to keep a weekly reading journal, and to write a final paper. |
