Course Overview This seminar explores encounters between Japan and gThe Westh (Europe, America) through art, crafts, and architecture. We will discuss texts and objects from 1300 to around 1960. Major topics will be Nanban art, "Dutch painting," export porcelain, export lacquer, exotic objects in Japan during the period of isolation, the Japonisme movement in France and Art Nouveau, the Bauhaus architectural movement in Germany, the Postwar period, and changing notions of gAsiannessh in the globalized world.
