Course Overview In the course of Cultural Anthropology, we conduct a group survey and a survey of life histories biennially. This year we engage in a group survey. Students will learn how to conduct semi-structured interviews and participant observation through practice.
This year, we will conduct a survey targeting the Japanese Orthodox Church (JOC) in Kyushu. Orthodoxy is one of the Christian confessions. The orthodoxy was delivered from Russia to Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912), and at its peak had as many believers as the Catholics. Due to the Russo-Japanese War (1904) and the Russian Revolution (1917), the number of believers declined drastically, and today there are probably less than 50 Orthodox believers actively practicing in Kyushu. However, among these believers, in addition to those who have inherited the faith from their ancestors, there are also emigrants from Russia and Ukraine, as well as from Europe and America. By interviewing them, we will learn about the history of the Orthodox Church in Kyushu and the current situation of multicultural coexistence through the JOC.
