Course Overview Cultural memory studies is an interdisciplinary field of research that examines the social construction of the past. It is based on the assumption that images of the past are always constructed from the perspective of, and in response to needs of, the present. This course introduces central concepts in memory studies, such as collective memory and its social frameworks, communicative and cultural memory, processes of canonization, the media of cultural memory, the invention of tradition, and sites of memory. These concepts are illustrated with concrete case studies from Japan.
