Course Overview The perspective of 'elites' has received increasing attention in recent years in terms of modern society. For example, after the French Revolution, the 1791 Constitution abolished the serfdom and hereditary system in public office. However, even in the 19th century, early modern masters with a strong hereditary character held public office, and the emergence of professionalised modern administrators had to wait until the end of the 19th century. Why this discrepancy between ideal and reality?
In this exercise, we will read Eric Ansault's The French Elite (2020) to clarify the changing image of the elite (i.e. the image of the ruling class) portrayed by modern society and to rethink modern society from the perspective of the 'elite'.
