Course Overview While this lecture presents an overview of early modern Japanese literature and its characteristics, I focus especially on the history of early modern waka poetry—its various aspects and accomplishments. Students will learn research methods for empirical analysis based on basic knowledge of classical Japanese texts (object), and basic procedures of transliteration and annotation. In order to master these research methods, students will need to compare waka poetry with other genres and consider waka poetry within its own time. We will follow the latest research on the history of early modern waka poetry by going freely back and forth between the basics and applications. I hope we can think about what literature is and what classics are.
