Course Overview

We will discover this crucial movement in the history of drama. For a start, we will thus explorethe concept of the absurd and its historical and philosophical context, with an extract fromAlbert Camus’ L’Etranger. Then, we will see how the theatre of Absurd brings innovations to the classical tradition, a borad outline of which we will provide. We will finally study texts from Ionesco, Beckett, Tardieu and extracts from filmed performances. We will also encourage reading aloud in class.
