Course Overview

Mallarmé: poetry, thought, painting. This class will focus on the French poet Stéphane Mallarmé. It will allow the students to have a better understanding of this writer often considered as cryptic. In a very easy-to-understand manner, we will decipher Un Coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard, one of the poet’s major publications. We will finally analyze the philosophical thought laying at the core of Mallarmé’s work. It is related to his vision of an integral art gathering poetry, music, stage performance and painting. His Parisian life and his Tuesday’s Salon, but also his suburban refuge along the Seine, will allow us to highlight his relationships with the greatest painters, compositors and writers of his time.
