Course Overview In this research, the Konkōmyō saishō ōkyō (Sovereign Kings of the Golden Light Sutra) was chosen as one of the source materials for the study of kunten. The Konkōmyō saishō ōkyō is a Buddhist sutra translated into Chinese by the Tang-dynasty monk Yijing (Jpn. Gijo) in the 7th century, and was revered in Japan since ancient times. The Kasuga Bunko manuscript of the sutra is one of only a few complete manuscript copied during the Nara period. The kunten, added during the Heian period, provide precious data on the Japanese language at that time.

Course Overview This course is designed to introduce graduate-level students to "discourse" or "usage-based" approaches of grammatical analysis – in other words, analytical approaches which strikingly contrast with typically Chomskyan/generativist models. We will discuss several readings which take a particular aspect of grammar and consider it from different cognitivist perspectives. Some of the topics that will be covered in this course include emergent grammar (lexicon and syntax), Construction Grammar (after Goldberg 1995), Preferred Argument Structure, and Information Flow.

Course Overview Last year, I published the general book "What is Balhae country" about Pal-hae/Bo-hai country (698 - 926). This book was designed to depict Pal-hae/Bo-hai country as a nation with multiple faces and historical significance in a pluralistic world beyond the controversy over how to draw Pal-hae/Bo-hai country as a national history is there. While reading along with the students about this book, supplementing what kind of research situation the concept was conceived under, what type of trial and error was born, thinking whether the attempt was successful or not To go. Among them, we plan to incorporate active learning methods in which students discuss each other. Ultimately ask students to write a review.

Course Overview This lecture examines the history of modern Iran from the viewpoint of "new" military history, which has come to encompass not only traditional topics such as the structure of military powers, strategies and tactics, wars and other military conflicts, etc., but also new themes including relation between military and society, military training and human body, and the media in wartime. After introducing these new trends to students, this lecture traces the historical development of Iran from the Safavid period (ca. 1500-1722) until the Islamic Revolution according to the following three viewpoints: 1) military and the state; 2) the relation between military and the Iranian society; and 3) external influences on the Iranian military. In addition, the Iranian case will be compared with those of the Ottoman Empire and Japan. This lecture aims not only to provide students with a new perspective of modern history, but also to invite them to a deeper understanding of the contemporary world, by transcending modern western values through the examination of the military history of modern Iran.

Course Overview The book club is a book sales organization with a membership system. It developed widely in Europe and America since the end of 19th century. In this course, we look at the book clubs in Germany, consider its social role and its relation to nationalism.
In the first half, we research the development of the book club in Germany from the end of the 19th century to the 1980s and discuss its contributing significantly to the “democratization of reading”. In the second half, we focus on the nationalistic book club “The German home library” and argue the relationship between the increasing closeness of the new middle-class to the Nazism and the book clubs in Germany after the First World War.
