Course Overview This course examines some basic methodologies practiced in the visual culture studies. We will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each methodology, how we can apply these to our own research questions, and, in reverse, what kind of research questions would be asked in each methodology. Due to the high demand of interdisciplinary research, being knowledgeable about using images in research are becoming more important in any field. Therefore, although the focus of this course is on art in early modern to modern Japan, it is open to any students who are working on such fields as literature, religion, history.
In the first half of class, we discuss the points in the textbook and share what we have faced in our research regarding to the point. In the second part, we will discuss how each methodology was applied in the research of Japanese art. Students will be asked to deliver a short presentation on an image focusing on what kind of methodology they will use for analysis in the last day of the course, and submit an essay based on the presentation.

In this course the students will be able to:
critically assess each methodology for analyzing images.
Showing very good understanding of the methodology and its literature; suggests some problems in applying the methodology, explain its benefits thoroughly and how to cover the deficits Showing understanding of the methodology and its literature; needs some explanations on its pros and cons Explains the reason for taking the methodology, but discussions on its pros and cons are missing No explanations at all on the methodology taken
G_B-1-3a [修士:作品の理解力]
read and interpretate the visual language in depth.
Showing a deep understanding of the work with thorough reading of the literature and logical analysis of data collected by the student, effectively written Showing understanding of the work based on the reading of literature and analysis, but some critical points are missing Has tried to explain the work by discussin the literature and analysing data, but lacks coherency Showing no or little understanding of the work, reading of the literature is not fully done and analysis lacks logic, which leads to the lack of persuasiveness
D_B-2 [博士:独創性]
use the analyzing and writing skills for the students’ own paper.
Has presented a unique point of view by thoroughly analyzing the literature, and the method is systematically constructed to answer the question seen from the point of view Has presented a point of view by analying the literature, and the method is constructed to answer the question Point of view is presented, and the method is shown, but needs some clarification in explaining the reason why these are important No explanations on the point of view nor method, merely a report
D_B-4a [博士:技能の統合]
use the analyzing and writing skills for the students’ own paper.
Skills are integrated into one to deliver the argument and ingenuity is seen in developing some skills, presenting a unique and deeper understanding Skills are integrated into one to reach a deeper understanding Trials are seen in synthesizing the skills to develop the argument Needs recapping and practicing of skills in research

1 Day 1 Introduction
We discuss some problems we have faced in conducting research. The difficulties in choosing the right methods that matches our research questions, researching the images online (social media, etc.) and applying Western theories to Japanese art history will be addressed.
Reading
“2 Researching with visual materials: a brief survey of conceptual debates” and “3 A critical visual methodology” in Visual Methodologies, pp. 14–71.
2 Day 2 Compositional Interpretation
It is often said that ‘looking carefully’ is important for understanding and researching an object. We will look at some examples to describe images and objects effectively.
Readings

Students will deliver a short presentation on their image or object focusing on what methodologies they will use in their research. We will also cover some ethics in using the images in our research.
Reading
