Course Overview

This course surveys the history of Japanese literature, from ancient times through the medieval period. We will read texts from a variety of genres: narrative tales, poetry, diaries, and plays. While the discussion of modern literature is beyond the scope of this course, the Meiji-period institutionalization of the academic discipline of national literature and the reception of traditional literature in modern times form one of its foci. We will examine the role of literature in the modern formation of a Japanese cultural identity. Other topics of focus include processes of canonization, the reception and modification of Chinese literary models, material and performative aspects of literary practice, and literature’s relationship to broader social, political, and religious currents.
