Course Overview This course provides students with a thorough knowledge of one of the most productive literary relationships in twentieth-century English-language poetry. We shall be reading a selection of material by Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, investigating how each drew formal and thematic inspiration from the other’s work. We shall read and discuss one or two poems each week, and all members of the class will be expected to contribute to discussion. By the end of the course, students will have an understanding of the groundbreaking nature of Plath and Hughes’s work, and of their personal struggles to achieve and maintain creative independence.
