Course Overview This course explores concepts and meanings manifested in places during Japan’s Premodern period. We will discuss works of architecture, planned sites, and spatial arrangements as well as painterly representations of buildings and sites. Our focus will be on the period of roughly the 1550s to 1870s but there will be some outliers. We will use mostly English secondary literature but also work on selected readings from:
Chino Kaori 千野香織 and Nishi Kazuo 西和夫. Fikushon toshite no kaiga: Bijutsushi no me, kenchikushi no me フィクションとしての絵画:美術史の眼・建築史の眼 (Tokyo: Perikansha ぺりかん社, 1991).
This will simultaneously build reading ability and bring us to better understand Japanese theoretical approaches to works of architecture and their representation in painting.
