Course Overview This course looks at Shinto shrines and the broader concept of "Shinto" starting in the Meiji period and continuing up to today. During the course, students will rethink certain concepts that have been taken for granted historically, including religion, secularism, time, space, and cultural boundaries. They will also broaden their understanding of modern Shinto shrines by looking at those established outside of Japan’s current borders, including in Japan's former colonies. Furthermore, students will have a chance to discuss and attempt the act of conducting research in Japanese as non-native speakers.
Keywords : Shinto, shrines, religion, secularism, colonialism
