Historical Sources in Medieval Europe (Seminar II)
|
Numbering Code: Course Code: 2023 FallTerm weekly Tue5 Ito Classroom E/J科目 (日本語, English) |
Course Overview |
The perspective of 'elites' has received increasing attention in recent years in terms of modern society. For example, after the French Revolution, the 1791 Constitution abolished the serfdom and hereditary system in public office. However, even in the 19th century, early modern masters with a strong hereditary character held public office, and the emergence of professionalised modern administrators had to wait until the end of the 19th century. Why this discrepancy between ideal and reality? In this exercise, we will read Eric Ansault's The French Elite (2020) to clarify the changing image of the elite (i.e. the image of the ruling class) portrayed by modern society and to rethink modern society from the perspective of the 'elite'. |

Course Overview |
This course aims to understand Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire), a premodern empire which lasted for 1000 years. Byzantine Empire is the continuation of the Roman Empire, but with different characteristics. For instance, the capital of the Byzantine Empire was not Rome but Constantinople. Christianity became the state religion at the end of the fourth century. The official language changed from Latin to Greek in the seventh century. Course Overview |
The aim of this course is to understand the basic concepts of literary criticism in ancient philosophy and to explain their characteristics. For example, literary works are sometimes regarded as art, but the concept of art did not exist in antiquity. Instead, the concept of 'mimesis' (imitation) played an important role. Also, while today we appreciate literary works using the concenpts of 'fiction/nonfiction,' such a category did not exist in antiquity. So how did ancient people appreciate literary works without concepts such as art and fiction? In this course, we will examine the arguments of Plato and Aristotle, who discussed poetry and artistic works, and consider their historical significance. |
